Academic advice and program planning by the deans and advisers are available to all SCE students. To arrange an in-person or phone appointment, call 401.865.2487 or email the SCE Office. Each student should keep a personal record of courses completed, since he or she alone is responsible for the accuracy and completion of the program. Students may access their online degree summary, which reflects the application of both transfer and PC credit to degree requirements, through the CyberFriar system.
Orientation for New Students
Orientation programs are held for new students at the start of the fall, spring and summer terms. The orientation programs provide students with an excellent opportunity to learn more about the School of Continuing Education programs and services, receive a campus tour, and meet classmates and campus administrators.
SCE also offers a peer-mentoring program, the Student Success Group, which matches incoming SCE students with more seasoned SCE students. Mentors reach out to incoming students, via email, several times throughout the semester to welcome the student, answer questions or provide information regarding school and related matters—perhaps how to juggle work, school, personal life, etc.
Academic Support Services
The Office of Academic Services (OAS) supports all Providence College students through a combination of academic and personal development programming. Services offered by the OAS include tutorial assistance in both writing and the content areas; workshops and one-on-one assistance with study skills, time management, and test preparation; and the provision of reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.
Students with documented disabilities (learning, physical, medical, temporary) may qualify for reasonable academic accommodations. The assistant director for disability services is available to discuss each student’s unique needs and coordinate individualized support. To protect the interests of students who are entitled to reasonable accommodations based on their disabilities, the College has established Student Procedures for ADA/504 Grievance Resolution.
The Center for Career & Professional Development maintains a robust collection of career development tools on its website, including resources for self-assessment (call 401.865.1290 for the password to Focus); major and career exploration; resume, cover letter and interviewing guides; how-to videos; links to internship and job search engines; and general graduate and professional school information, many of which are available to SCE students. Alpha Sigma Lambda
Alpha Sigma Lambda, the international honor society for adult continuing education students, recognizes high academic scholarship within a curriculum stressing the liberal arts. Candidates must be in the top 10 percent of matriculating students, with a grade point average of at least 3.2 (typically higher for SCE students).
Additionally, the following criteria for membership must be met:
- Members must have completed a minimum of 30 college credits or the equivalent in regular credit courses at the Providence College School of Continuing Education and shall be matriculated students in a degree program who have not been awarded a previous baccalaureate degree. (Transfer credits may not be included in the required 30 college credit hours in regular courses.)
- At least 15 credits of a student’s total credits shall be earned in courses in the liberal arts/sciences, not including applied arts/sciences, and shall be outside the student’s major field. Accepted transfer credits may be used to meet the liberal education requirement.
- Students must have been in attendance at Providence College for a minimum of four semesters.
The Eta Lambda Chapter, established at Providence College in 1991, holds an induction ceremony in the Spring semester. Chapter members provide leadership at SCE events, community service projects, and other activities that enhance learning and service at Providence College.
Providence College is focused on providing anytime, anywhere access to information. With CyberFriar, the main Web interface with the College’s administrative database, students can manage their personal and academic records from their desktops or laptops. They can register for courses; view address and personal information, final grades, financial aid and billing account information; request academic transcripts; and monitor their progress toward completion of their degree requirements.
Every Providence College student is assigned his or her own unique Banner ID and Personal Identification Number (PIN) which allows access to CyberFriar. Students who have not received their Banner ID, may do so by contacting the Office of Enrollment Services at 401.865.1033. Students are required to change their PIN once they have gained access to CyberFriar. It is vitally important to maintain the utmost confidentiality of the Banner User ID and PIN since they provide full access to personal information.

Network and Email Accounts
All SCE students are provided with Providence College network and email accounts. New students receive a letter with their email and network account information. The network username and password allows access to the college computers in the labs and library; network printers; and the PC-Secure wireless network. SCE uses College email as the official means of communication. It is therefore the responsibility of students to check their college account regularly.

Sakai is the College’s web-based learning system, which is used to supplement on-campus classes and to deliver online classes. Students can communicate with faculty and other students, access course materials, participate in online discussion groups, check course syllabi, submit papers, and efficiently manage their class work.
Students log into Sakai with their PC network username and password. Once in Sakai, select More Sites from the menu to access your course(s). For login help, contact the Helpdesk at 401.865.4357. For general help with Sakai visit www.providence.edu/ihelp/ or email email@example.com.
The School of Continuing Education offers many online courses through Sakai, throughout the academic year - fall, winter, spring, and summer terms. Courses may be offered completely online, or in a hybrid or blended format, with several on-campus meetings during the semester. Online courses are just as rigorous as on-campus courses. Because classes do not meet at regularly scheduled times, there is a heightened need for students to be self-directed and to actively participate in order to keep pace. A Basic Online Skills Review is available on the SCE website.
Student Identification Cards
School of Continuing Education degree-seeking students may obtain an ID card from the PC Card Office (Harkins Hall, room 401). Non-degree students may obtain an ID card from the SCE Office; it must be validated each semester. SCE students are entitled to the use of campus facilities such as the library, computer labs, dining areas, and parking upon presentation of a valid ID card.
Emergency Notifications and School Closings
The College maintains an Emergency Notification System (ENS) through which message alerts are transmitted via cell phone, text, or email. In order to receive important notifications in the event of an emergency, students should contact the SCE office at 401-865-2487 to make sure their cell phone numbers are on file.
For information on school closings due to inclement weather, an announcement will be made on the College’s weather advisory line: 401-865-1012. Announcements may also be made on Providence television and radio stations, and through the ENS when appropriate.
