The Graduate Studies Programs in Education offers courses of study leading to a master’s degree in education (M.Ed.) or a master of arts degree (M.A.) in the areas of school leadership, school counseling, global education/TESOL, higher education, literacy, secondary education (PACT program), special education, and urban teaching. The higher education program also offers a certificate in sports administration. The graduate education programs leading to state teacher certification (school leadership, school counseling, literacy, mathematics, PACT, special education, and urban teaching) have received RI Department of Education approval. Upon successful completion of these programs, graduates are eligible to apply for certification in RI. They are also eligible to transfer their RI certification to other states, following those states’ specific requirements.

Admission Requirements

Common requirements for all graduate education programs (except PACT) include the following:

• Completed application form and application fee
• Personal Statement
• Official undergraduate and graduate transcripts with appropriate GPA:
• 2.75 -2.99 GPA for consideration for conditional admission, or
• 3.00 or higher GPA for consideration for full admission
• Two official letters of reference

Note: Once admitted no student will be allowed to enroll in classes until they indicate their intention to attend Providence College in the application portal. Full-time (9 credits/semester) students must also submit a completed immunization form.

*Note that students can take up to two classes prior to being formally admitted to a program.

Applications for a specific term will be accepted up to the application deadline but will not be considered for admission until that deadline.

Degree Requirements

To be considered eligible for graduation, students must:

• Complete all required and elective courses in their program
• Earn a cumulative 3.0 or higher GPA upon completion of their coursework
• Complete a portfolio of their work and pass a portfolio review (School Leadership, School Counseling, Literacy, PACT, and Special Education programs)
• To be eligible for certification in Rhode Island, students who successfully complete the School Leadership, School Counseling, Literacy, Mathematics with Certification, PACT, Special Education, and Urban Teaching with Certification programs must also pass the appropriate Praxis pedagogical examination.

Scholarships

The John Monahan, Francis, and Mildred Sullivan, and Rose A. Coccia Scholarships assist racial and ethnic minority students and others who demonstrate a desire and ability to contribute to the College’s diversity, who have been accepted into a School of Professional Studies graduate programs. These scholarships provide a limited amount of funds and will be in the form of a tuition grant with the money deposited directly into the student’s account.
