Social Science

Bachelor of Arts 

An interdisciplinary program of study is offered in the social sciences which leads to the degree of bachelor of arts. This program allows students to combine courses from any two or three social sciences: anthropology, economics, history, political science, psychology, sociology, black studies (BLS 101 and others by approval of the Social Science Program director), and women’s studies (WMS 101 and others by approval of the Social Science Program director). Each student works with the program director to select courses with a focus on the student’s interests and career plans.

Required Courses

Academic programs vary in their requirements. Students should consult with their faculty advisor and the Academic Guidebook to review the Academic Planning Form pertinent to their program of study. In addition, students should review course descriptions regarding any prerequisites for required courses. Graduation requirements include a minimum of 120 credit hours, although some academic programs may require additional credits. Please refer to the Academic Resources section of the catalog for more information. The major requires a minimum of 10 courses, usually selected from two or three social science disciplines. These 10 courses must include a research methods course (ECN 214, PSC 102, PSY 201, HIS 100 or SOC 209); a social science theory course (APG 401; ECN 309, 484; PSC 341, 342, 343, 344, 348 or 480; PSY 481, 486; or SOC 403 or 417); and SSC 480 Social Science Capstone Seminar. At least 8 of the 10 required courses, including SSC 480, must be at the 300 or 400 level.
