Degree Requirements

The MBA Program requires a total of 13 to 21 courses, depending on the student’s undergraduate preparation, which includes a required foundational course, MBA 502: Foundations of Business (0-credits). Students must fulfill MBA foundation (prerequisite), core, and elective courses to complete the degree. MBA Core Courses

The following core courses are required:

MBA Electives

In addition to the MBA core, students are required to take at least two to three elective courses. If a student is waived from a core course or the internship requirement, they must take an elective in its place to complete the MBA Program with thirteen MBA courses and MBA 502. The quantity of electives differs for each student, based on the ability to waive coursework.

Elective and prerequisite offerings may vary by term/year and cannot be guaranteed.

MBA Course Waiver

Students who have six undergraduate courses with a “B” average or better in accountancy, finance, management, and marketing may waive the related MBA core course. This course must be replaced with an elective. Students must complete at least 36 credits plus MBA 502 to satisfy the degree requirements.

MBA Concentrations

The MBA Program offers concentrations in accountancy*, finance, international business, management, and marketing. To fulfill an MBA concentration, students must complete at least three electives in one of these areas. A concentration is not required to graduate. Not all students are eligible for three electives but may decide to take additional courses to fulfill the concentration.

Students must submit a Concentration Declaration Form to the MBA Program Office when admitted to the program.

*The Accounting concentration is available to Accounting cohort students and part-time students only.

Graduate Business Certificates

Students may choose to enroll in a Graduate Business certificate while working towards their MBA degree. Course credits may not be counted towards both a concentration and a certificate. If a student would like both a concentration and a certificate, they must take the additional elective courses to be applied towards the concentration/certificate. Change Leadership Management (CLM) Graduate Certificate

The Change Leadership Management (CLM) Graduate Certificate Program is a 3 course (9 credit hour) management certificate taught by top faculty members in the Providence College School of Business. The focus is on gaining personal insight and confidence in leading and promoting change, thinking critically through strategic implications of decisions, and managing and collaborating with others to get work done effectively. These competencies have been identified as integral business skills employees need to lead change and make better business decisions.

Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics

This 3-course, 9-credit-hour business analytics certificate is taught by PC faculty recognized as experts in their fields. The Business Analytics Graduate Certificate Program provides a rapid foundational education in decision making and quantitative analysis, with a focus on building confidence to use data to make strategic decisions. This competency has been identified as an integral business skill all employees will need to lead change and make better business decisions.

Graduate Certificate in Sports Management

The Providence College Graduate Certificate in Sports Management is a 3-course, graduate-level program offered by the School of Business in conjunction with the School of Professional Studies’ Higher Education program. It explores various elements of this growing industry and helps prepare students to excel within it. This program develops the management knowledge and skills needed to lead sports organizations, as well as businesses that serve and interact with them.

Internships

The MBA program requires full-time work experience or the completion of an internship, including registration and completion of 

  within the student’s first semester in the program full-time. The internship requirement may be waived with permission of the PCSB Graduate Program Office, if the student has commensurate career experience, and an elective must be substituted for degree completion. Students may contact the PCSB Graduate Program for additional details. This is a three-credit course that is part of the core requirements of the MBA curriculum. Students must obtain an internship placement at either a for-profit or a not-for-profit organization. Paid and unpaid internships may receive academic credit, but paid internships are preferred. The student must submit a learning agreement and obtain final approval from the PCSB Graduate program office before registering in MBA 699.

The Center for Career Education and Professional Development Office and MBA faculty internship advisors are available to provide assistance in finding an internship. Please note that graduate assistantships do not fulfill the internship requirement.

It is our belief that the MBA internship will be a unique experience that will transform your academic work into real-world experience. It is an exciting opportunity to network with business professionals, explore new possibilities, and witness the dynamic nature of the business world firsthand.

Undergraduates who have received credit for an internship toward their undergraduate degree cannot also receive MBA graduate credit for the same internship. A student who receives a business-related full-time job offer prior to starting the MBA Program can request a waiver. Requests for a waiver must be submitted to the PCSB Graduate Program office within the first semester of study.

MBA Capstone Policy

  is the capstone course for the MBA degree and should be taken toward the end of a student’s program. An MBA candidate must have completed the required prerequisites (MBA 603 MBA 626 MBA 651 MBA 690 ) and be in good academic standing (GPA 3.0 or higher) to enroll or have permission from the Graduate Program Director.

Transfer Credits

Graduate courses, that have not been applied toward another degree, can be evaluated for transfer credit by the PCSB Graduate Program Director for suitability. Additionally, the transfer of graduate courses is governed by the following College policies:

  1. A maximum of six graduate credits may be transferred;
  2. They must be from an AACSB accredited graduate business program and institution of higher learning;
  3. They must have been taken within five years of the date of transfer (unless an exception is made for a particular course by the program director); and
  4. A minimum grade of “B” is required.

Students must complete a PCSB Graduate transfer form, submitted with a syllabus and transcript, for approval from the program. Current students must gain preapproval from the PCSB Graduate Program Office.

Study Abroad

There are international options available, such as short-term programs, and international internships. The PCSB Graduate Program Office markets these options to students. Please see https://business.providence.edu/go-global/ for more details and past international experiences.

Thesis

A thesis, while not required, may be completed and can substitute for two elective courses (6 credits) with permission of the PCSB Graduate Program Director. The thesis should be academic and include significant research. PCSB Graduate Program Office approval of the thesis topic and committee is required prior to registration in the thesis course(s). The thesis courses.
