Degree requirements

The MBA Program requires a total of 12 to 21 courses, depending upon the student’s undergraduate preparation. A thesis, while not required, may be completed and can substitute for two elective courses with permission of the MBA program director. The thesis may be essentially academic or could be based on a practical business topic. There is no language requirement for the MBA degree.

Research/Internships

The MBA Program has affiliations with regional business firms, nonprofits, and government agencies which regularly make their facilities available to our students for research projects and internships. Beginning with the incoming class of 2009, MBA candidates must complete an internship. (The internship may be waived with the permission of the MBA program director if the student has commensurate career experience and an elective substituted in its place.)

The following undergraduate prerequisite courses can be taken at Providence College or at another institution of higher learning:

Transfer Credits

Graduate courses which have not been applied toward another degree are evaluated for transfer by the individual program director for suitability to the requirements of their particular program. Additionally, the transfer of graduate courses is governed by the following College policies:

  1. A maximum of six graduate credits may be transferred;
  2. They must be from an accredited institution of higher learning;
  3. They must have been taken within five years of the date of transfer (unless an exception is made for a particular course by the program director); and
  4. A minimum grade of “B” is required.

For MBA courses, syllabi are reviewed to assist in determining equivalency with Providence College MBA courses. Distance learning courses from institutions not AACSB accredited are excluded.

Total: 27 Credits

MBA Courses

In addition to the core required courses, a student is required to take three elective courses (if MBA 699 internship course is taken) or four elective courses, if the internship course is waived. Students are encouraged to take MBA 603, 626, 651, and 690 early in their studies; the capstone, MBA 700, should be taken at the end of the student’s program of study (see MBA Capstone Policy below). Students who have six undergraduate courses with a “B” average in one of the above six required core subjects may apply for an exemption from that required course. An advanced elective, in that same field, may be substituted for the required course. Such a student would still need 12 graduate courses (36 credits) to satisfy the degree requirements.

MBA Capstone Policy

MBA 700, Strategic Management in a Global Environment, is the capstone course for the MBA degree. Enrollment in this capstone course, preferably in the last semester of study for the MBA, requires permission of the MBA Director. An MBA candidate must have completed the required prerequisites and be in good academic standing (GPA 3.0 or higher) to enroll.

**The internship is required for students without career experience. With permission of the MBA Director, an MBA elective may be substituted for the internship course if the student has had a career experience that meets the internship policy requirement. (See the internship policy document available from the MBA Program office.)
