The Business Studies Program is designed to provide students in majors other than business with an understanding of the language and basic concepts of business. Employers seek students with solid communication and critical thinking skills derived from a strong liberal arts education who also have some business acumen. The Business Studies Program thus gives students the opportunity to elect a non-business major for which they have or find a passion while also obtaining a broad background in business. There is no official major that relates directly to the program. It is not necessary for a student to select a specific business specialty such as Accountancy, Finance, Management, or Marketing. The Business Studies Program crosses ALL of the business and business-related majors with this knowledge integrated in the capstone course seminar.
The Program consists of a series of seven business and business-related courses (21 credits) that students can take to supplement a non-business major. Students who successfully complete the requirements of the program are awarded a Certificate in Business Studies. Students can combine the Business Studies Program with any non-business major offered by the College. As an example, if a student has a strong interest in English, that student would select English as a major. The student would then utilize elective courses to complete the requirements of the Business Studies Program. Upon graduation, the students who pursue the program will receive a degree in their major area (English in the example we have given) along with the Certificate in Business Studies. Internships are not required but are strongly recommended by the Program in either their major area of interest or combining it with a business field. Students are also strongly encouraged to apply at graduation for any position that a business student might also consider.
NOTE: Students are not eligible for this program until they are second-semester freshmen. Students should enroll as early in their academic careers as possible. Seniors are not eligible to enroll.
