The Core Curriculum is the heart of the liberal arts education for which Providence College is well-known. The program provides students with the knowledge and intellectual skills that will serve not only as a basis for a lifetime of interest in the humanities, social sciences, and the natural sciences, but also for a strong foundation for career and professional pursuits.
The following courses comprise the Core Curriculum and are required in all bachelor’s degree programs:

Perspectives on Western Civilization: 9 credit hours
INT 101, 102 and 201
Philosophy: 6 credit hours
One ethics course required
Theology: 6 credit hours
One 200-level course and one 300-level course
Social Science: 3 credit hours
includes economics, law, leadership, political science, psychology, sociology, and social work courses
Science: 3 credit hours
Certain courses in biology, chemistry, natural science or physics
Quantitative Reasoning: 3 credit hours
Fine Arts: 3 credit hours
Certain courses in creative writing, studio art, film, art history, music history, theater
Intensive Writing: 6 credit hours
Oral Communication: 3 credit hours
Proficiencies:
Students must complete a course in each of the following areas (in many cases a single course will fulfill both a core requirement and a proficiency):
- Diversity
- Civic/Global Engagement
- Information Literacy
- Collaboration and Teamwork
