Data Science

Minor

Data science is a combination of statistical mathematics, machine learning, data analysis/visualization, and computer science. This multidisciplinary field uses scientific inference and mathematical algorithms to extract meaningful knowledge and insights from a large amount of structured and unstructured data.

Effective data scientists can identify relevant questions, collect data from multiple data sources, organize the information, translate results into solutions, and communicate their findings to assist decision-making. These skills are required in almost all industries, causing skilled data scientists to be increasingly valuable.

Organizations are using data science to turn data into a competitive advantage. Data science reveals trends and produces insights that businesses can use to make better decisions and create more innovative products. Many companies have made data science a priority and are investing in it heavily. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 31.4% employment growth for data scientists between 2020 and 2030.

The data science minor consists of 19-20 credits.
