Required Courses
Students are required to complete 10 courses in women’s and gender studies which must include:
- WGS 101 - Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies
- WGS 489 - Capstone Seminar: Issues in Women’s and Gender Studies .
- At least six WGS courses at the 300 or 400 level.
- At least three WGS courses that are designated “Humanities” (HUM).
- At least three WGS courses that are designated “Social Science or Natural Science” (SSC/NSC).
- The remaining two WGS courses can be designated as either ”Humanities” (HUM) or “Social or Natural Science” (SSC/NSC).

Please note that several WGS elective courses are designated as Humanities (HUM) and Social Science/Natural Science (SSC/NSC), and therefore can be articulated as either HUM or SSC/NSC, depending on students’ needs and preferences, and in consultation with the Department Chair.
Please refer to the Women’s and Gender Studies Department website, https://womens-studies.providence.edu/, and click on the “courses” tab, for the most up to date information on all WGS courses, including which WGS elective courses are designated Humanities (HUM), which WGS elective courses are designated Social Science/Natural Science (SSC/NSC), and which WGS elective courses are designated as both Humanities (HUM) and Social Science/Natural Science (SSC/NSC).
Please note that because Women’s and Gender Studies electives are interdisciplinary, they are often cross-listed with other departments or programs. The Chair of the Women’s and Gender Studies Department will be responsible for verifying student compliance with the requirements of the major.

Academic programs vary in their requirements. Students should consult with their faculty advisor and the Academic Guidebook to review the Academic Planning Form pertinent to their program of study. In addition, students should review course descriptions regarding any prerequisites for required courses. Graduation requirements include a minimum of 120 credit hours, although some academic programs may require additional credits. Please refer to the Academic Resources section of the catalog for more information. Information regarding the Core Curriculum is available within each course and online.
